What are the employment opportunities?

BS degree graduates in dental hygiene are qualified for the traditional employment setting as dental office clinicians as well as roles in marketing, community health and dental hygiene education.

AS degree graduates are qualified for positions as dental office clinicians.

Starting Salaries
Starting salaries of dental hygienists vary based on the region, workplace and skill level. In Utah, the salary range for a dental hygienist is $30,000 or more per year. Many dental hygienists are employed 32 or fewer hours per week and job opportunities in this field are readily available.  For more information, go to Career Services.

   

What will I learn in the program?

Your education will emphasize the basic sciences: microbiology, chemistry, pathology, anatomy and physiology.

You will learn to monitor patients’ health histories, examine teeth and oral structures including soft tissues; remove hard and soft deposits from above and below the gum line; apply cavity-preventative agents; develop oral hygiene programs with patients and instruct them in plaque control; expose, process and interpret dental x-rays; perform oral cancer and blood pressure screenings; and design and implement community dental health programs.

Is there an application deadline?

The application deadline for the AS Degree dental hygiene program is February 1 for the following fall semester.

Enrollment in the WSU dental hygiene program is limited to 30 students each fall. The application process is competitive, so we encourage you to apply early.
