Weber State University was the first school in the world to develop an online Medical Laboratory Sciences program for both AAS and BS degrees, beginning in 2001. This program is an innovation in advancing working professionals from Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) to Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS). Students from all over the world participate in WSU's online program.
Modern health care is evolving faster than ever, and with it comes
changes to the job descriptions of clinical laboratory personnel. Employers need skilled employees to fill supervisory positions, utilize up-to-date quality assurance principles to control costs, maintain regulatory
compliance, and increase the overall efficiency of the laboratory as well as routine bench work. The WSU Medical Laboratory Sciences online AAS and BS degree programs focus on these high standards.
As a student, you will complete numerous projects that focus on the day-to-day administrative aspects of the laboratory. These projects will teach valuable skills such as: CAP and CLIA compliance, new instrument selection, policy and procedure writing, workload management, test method comparison and validation, quality assurance practices, along with approaches to teaching and supervision. All information and data for these projects will be gathered from your place of employment, thereby benefiting you and your employer.
In addition to your project-based courses, you will take advanced clinical courses in chemistry, microbiology, hematology and bloodbank. In each of these classes, you will focus on laboratory competencies that will be completed in the laboratory where you are employed.
Support courses and general education requirements can be taken either through the WSU online program or at your nearby university or college. We will work with that university to transfer these credits to WSU for them to count toward your degree.
