What are the employment opportunities?
English graduate degrees prepare students for work in a wide range of careers. The obvious career is teaching. For someone who is certified as a classroom teacher an MA will lead to increased salary and opportunities for promotion and special assignments, depending on the school district. For those who are not interested in elementary or secondary education there is the possibility of teaching at the college level, usually in an adjunct position. Another career area is contract and grant writing and editing. The English graduate has experience in independent thinking, creative interpretation and analysis, writing, presenting and documented research. All these skills are useful in business, securities, real estate, public relations, sales and marketing, management and administration. And, finally, many MA students decide to earn another graduate degree such as the Ph.D, DA or Ed.D. For more information, go to Career Services.
