Minimum Admission Requirements
Admission to the Master of Arts in English program requires a bachelor’s degree, preferably in English. If you have less English preparation, you may petition for conditional admission, which might require that you take additional classes at the 5000 level preparatory to full matriculation.
You must complete an application form and provide a current resume and transcripts from all institutions of higher education attended. Required criteria for acceptance into the program include:
- bachelor’s degree preferably in English, with a minimum GPA of 3.25 in your major.
- submission of scores on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
- three letters of recommendation from educational or professional references.
If you have a bachelor of science degree, you must show foreign language equivalency with the Weber State University bachelor of arts requirement (4th semester). You must meet this requirement before graduating from the program.
You will also be interviewed by the program director and will be asked to submit a writing sample.
Foreign Language Requirement
The Master of Arts foreign language requirement is the Standard Language Proficiency. You may meet the requirement by fulfilling one of the following options:
- Completing four semesters or more in the language with a grade of C or better.
- Passing a CLEP test.
- Passing a reading examination in a foreign language. If you use this option, you will translate a passage into English using a dictionary. Unusual or colloquial words will be glossed for you. (Preparatory classes may be offered to support this option.)
- Other comparable language experience must be approved by the Master of Arts in English Program Director.
If English is your second language, you may meet the language requirement by verifying proficiency in your native language by any of the means provided in the above options

Master of Arts Program Innovations
Certain MA courses will be scheduled in a course-cluster arrangement. The semester courses will examine a particular period or genre of literature and will be paired with two half-semester two-credit-hour courses (8 weeks) that will provide focused work in a related area of literature. This arrangement of courses is unique to the Weber State University Master of Arts in English. You may select from any of the half-semester courses offered during a given semester.
5000 Level Courses
If you do not have a bachelor of arts degree in English, you may be advised to take 5000 level courses. You may choose to take 5000 level courses in order to meet your personal interests. Regardless of the number of 5000 level courses, you must take at least 26 hours at the 6000 level.
