2003 IT Assessment Report

September 8, 2003

The following Weber State University "2002-2003 Goals" related to information technology:

    #2.    Better use technology to support students, faculty, staff and community.
                -Administrative software conversion.
                -Learning management software.
                -Web interfaces/services.
                -Portals.
                -Lampros Hall for Teaching, Learning and Technology plan.

    #3    Develop implementation plans for Davis Campus.
                -Information technology support.


 

Within these over-arching goals, the Information Technology Division worked on twenty-three specific objectives in 2002-03.  The results by department were as follows:

Administrative Computing

  • The new Campus Pipeline Luminis student portal was implemented on March 17, 2003.
  • Initial Business Process Analysis (BPA) activities for the new Banner FRS system were completed; BPA processes for Banner Alumni/Development, Human Resources and Student Information System were initiated.
  • A robust Oracle database environment was established.
  • The Lynx [WSU’s name for the new SCT-Banner ERP systems] FRS system went live on July 8, 2003.  The Lynx Human Resources and Alumni/Development systems are on track for implementation in January/March 2004.
  • The new university-wide standard reporting tool (Crystal Enterprise) was implemented.  Initial training classes were held and additional training sessions are ongoing.
  • The new Oracle-based "data warehouse" of critical historical data was implemented.

Communications Arts & Technologies

  • The programming phase of planning for the new WSU Technology Center in Lampros Hall was completed.
  • Substantial progress was achieved in the adoption of digital media technologies, remaining on-track for becoming completely when the new Lampros Hall Technology Center opens in Fall 2004.
  • Planning and implementation for the multimedia classrooms in the new WSU-Davis Building was completed.  Classes began on August 26, 2003 with state-of-the-art multimedia support.

Computing Support

  • A new faculty/staff/student support model was implemented, bringing Computing Support (including the former Academic Computing), Computing Operations, and Multimedia Services (formerly Communications Arts & Technologies) under a new "Technology Services" department.
  • Successfully initiated the WebCT Vista learning management pilot project and began working with WSU Online support staff toward eventual conversion of all online and hybrid courses.
  • The new diesel generator in the Tech Ed building came on line Spring 2003 providing back-up power and 24x7 availability of all systems in the Computing Operations Center.
  • Contributed to completion of the programming phase of planning for the new WSU Technology Center in Lampros Hall.

The IT Web Group

  • Significant new services were added to the faculty/staff portal.
  • Completed implementation of the university’s redesigned "next generation" web site, including the new Ingeniux content management software.

Systems & Network Management

  • Switched Fast Ethernet network connections are now generally available.
  • Working with UEN, significant progress was made in achieving network redundancy at both the Ogden and new WSU-Davis campuses.
  • Installed and began to manage the new Sun/Solaris technical infrastructure for the SCT Banner administrative systems.
  • Installed the hardware and software for the new WebCT Vista learning management system.

Telecommunications

  • Completed implementation of telephone service in the new University Village residence halls.
  • Completed and issued the RFP for a new telemanagement system.
  • Implemented improved integrated messaging.
  • Provided integrated (four digit dial between campuses) telephone service to the new WSU-Davis campus.

General (CIO Office)

  • Provided leadership in organizing general technology support at the new WSU-Davis & South Campus facilities.
  • Reorganized the IT Division to better align with changing customer needs.
  • Improved assessment efforts and completed Standard 5 of the accreditation self-study.

Each unit within the IT Division is working diligently on their specific objectives.  As indicated above, substantial progress has been made, and the IT Division is committed to fulfilling its role in serving the mission and goals of Weber State University.
