As indicated in the 2000-01 TDEI Proposal the 2000/2001 USHE Technology & Distance Education Initiative provided Weber State University (WSU) with funding in two categories: (1) Student Support Systems ($90,035) and (2) Institutional Infrastructure ($117,519). As usual, WSU's share of site licenses administered by the USHE Commissioner's Office were paid out of these amounts, including $24,169 for the NAI software contract, $15,000 for the statewide Oracle license, and $43,958 for the statewide Novell software license. This left $75,035 in student support systems funds and $49,393 in institutional infrastructure funds.
The centrally administered funds from the USHE Technology & Distance Education Initiative funds in 2000-01 were used as follows:
Student Support Systems (6-38382). All of the funds in this category were expended by August 2001. Numerous servers and related hardware and software were purchased to support the implementation of web-based applications for students. The Domain Name Server (DNS) software was moved from the old VAX hardware to new Sun Microsystems redundant servers to improve performance and reliability. The proposed new e-mail system for students (incorporating a permanent lifelong e-mail address) was implemented in May 2001, and was very well received. [More than 7,000 accounts had been created and were in use by September 2001.] The goal of a student portal integrated with the university's student information system (STAARS) was not realized. However, a small portion of these funds were used to help create pilot wireless applications on the Ogden campus..
Institutional Infrastructure (6-38383). As of August 31, 2001 only a small portion of this funding was still uncommitted. These funds were used to continue the development and expansion of the university's new Gigabit Ethernet data network. The Phase II server, firewall and router upgrades were essentially complete and a portion of the Phase III building hub and switch upgrades was also completed, or in process.
