Project Scope Management includes the processes required to ensure that the project includes all the work required, and only the work required, to complete the project successfully. Project scope management is primarily concerned with defining and controlling what is and is not included in the project.
The project scope statement is the definition of the project—what needs to be accomplished. The Develop Preliminary Project Scope Statement process addresses and documents the characteristics and boundaries of the project and its associated products and services, as well as the methods of acceptance and scope control. A project scope statement includes:
• Project and product objectives
• Product or service requirements and characteristics
• Product acceptance criteria
• Project boundaries
• Project requirements and deliverables
• Project constraints
• Project assumptions
• Initial project organization
• Initial defined risks
• Schedule milestones
• Initial WBS
• Order of magnitude cost estimate
• Project configuration management requirements
Create Work Breakdown Structure
The WBS is a deliverable-oriented hierarchical decomposition of the work to be executed by the project team, to accomplish the project objectives and create the required deliverables. The WBS organizes and defines the total scope of the project. The WBS subdivides the project work into smaller, more manageable pieces of work, with each descending level of the WBS representing an increasingly detailed definition of the project work. The planned work contained within the lowest-level WBS components, which are called work packages, can be scheduled, cost estimated, monitored, and controlled.
Look at all required deliverables and the tasks associated with them. Determine which ones need to be done first and if any are dependent on others being completed first. Map out your timeline so you have a projected end date for the project. This will let you know if you can meet the project deadline or if you need to add more people, budget or time to your project.
Assign all tasks to the members of the project team. Bring in additional help if needed. Make sure your team members have the time required to complete the tasks. Adjustments to the project schedule may need to be altered.
Scope verification is the process of obtaining the stakeholders’ formal acceptance of the completed project scope and associated deliverables.
