By the very nature of a network, any device on a network has the potential to impact the operation of any or all other devices on the network. In order for the stability, reliability, and security of the WSU data network to be maintained, it is necessary for there to be agreement as to a single point of final responsibility and authority for the operation of the data network. This statement outlines the responsibility of the System/Network Management Department of the Information Technology Division in this regard. With the advent and increasing use of wireless networking, it is necessary for this same principle to be extended to the radio spectrum used for wireless network transmissions. Control of these kinds of devices is necessary in order to assure the continued reliable use of the WSU wireless network for the benefit of all.
Definitions:
Network - All wired and wireless connectivity to provide access to Weber State University resources and the Internet.
Network Device - Any router, switch or wireless access point.
Wireless Access Point (WAP) - Any device using radio frequency to provide access to the network.
Router - Any device or software that provides intelligent transfer of data from one network segment to another.
Switch - Any device or software that provides intelligent or non-intelligent transfer of data on the same network segment.
Operating Policy:
It is the operating policy of the University to reserve the right of selecting, installing, maintaining and supporting all Network Devices to the Systems and Network Management Department (SNM). Within the parameters of this policy, SNM will make all reasonable efforts to accommodate the special needs or practices of individuals, groups, departments and colleges.
SNM is responsible for the maintenance and performance of the Network, and has the right to delegate tasks to adjunct groups to perform its responsibilities. In order to assure the Network is in good working order for the University, SNM maintains final authority over the following:
Routers
Switches
Wireless Access Points
In addition, SNM has the final authority over any device or software that may interfere with the normal operation of the Network, including cordless phones, remote sensing devices, or other devices emitting radio signals interfering with the wireless network. SNM may, at its discretion, remove or restrict any device or software found to be interfering with normal operations. SNM will make an effort to contact any responsible parties, but will not delay returning the Network to normal operation if contact cannot be made. Exceptions to this policy can be made after review of the request by the Network Engineer, and approval of the VP of Information Technology.
