What is a portal and what does it do?

  • Using a single log-on, portal technology provides the capability to pull together information, subjects and functionality from multiple systems. This is combined with the campus administrative systems into student-based self-service offerings including e-mail, chat forums and personalized features.
  • At this time the student portal will provide student services, WSU Online courses, e-mail, communication and collaboration tools. The system will evolve over time to extend its offerings into a variety of categories such as the library, financial aid, student activities and additional student services. The goal is to provide students with a unified self-service environment that reduces frustration, wait time and redundant tasks. Students can shape the online environment according to their own needs and preferences.
  • The portals’ functionality will continue to evolve as we implement additional components of ITIP including the Lynx administrative systems and the new learning management system, Vista from WebCT. The student portal will improve and streamline many business processes for students.
