As computer hackers have become increasingly sophisticated and persistent, numerous incidents have been reported in the media involving unauthorized access to sensitive personal information at many public and private institutions. Actual cases of identity theft related to these incidents are both rare and difficult to document. However, this is a risk that must be considered whenever personal information is involved.
