24x7 Coverage

"All the time"

It is now old news that IT runs 24x7, but most of the IT staff goes home after eight or 10 hours. Evenings, weekends, holidays, and vacations are becoming an ever-larger part of a staffing problem for the IT shop. Most academic institutions will never be able to increase staff count to extend full-service coverage for all those "extra" hours. But even a quick look at an internet bandwidth usage chart shows some worrisome mismatches between periods of high usage and high staffing.
