Prospective FYE Peer Mentors
FYE Peer Mentors are experienced WSU students who help new students successfully adjust to college, both academically and socially. Peer mentors serve as an additional resource for students in Introduction to the University (Education 1105) and help create a learning community. Apply to be a peer mentor today!

Requirements

Peer mentors must participate in a retreat prior to the beginning of the semester. Additionally, FYE will sponsor any peer mentor who would like to attend the Fall Leadership Academy.

Peer mentors are also required to enroll in the Peer Mentor Leadership Seminar (Education 3170). In this two credit, upper-division elective course, you will learn how to effectively work and communicate with FYE students and instructors.

Responsibilities

The table below lists some of the responsibilities you will have in the Peer Mentor Leadership Seminar and as the mentor for one section of Introduction to the University. You should expect to spend about five hours a week preparing for and fulfilling these tasks.

bullet Attend planning meetings with instructor
bullet Participate in class discussions
bullet Assist students in group activities
bullet Interact with students outside of class
bullet Organize in-class social
bullet Give weekly five-minute presentations on a topic of interest
bullet Teach one class session
bullet Attend each EDUC 3170 class session
bullet Actively participate in class discussions
bullet Submit reflection pieces
bullet Complete other assignments as described in syllabus


Qualifications

Required criteria:

bullet Full-time student
bullet One semester completed at Weber State University
bullet Good academic standing (cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher)
bullet Knowledge of departments and services at WSU
bullet Nomination by an FYE instructor
bullet Names of two WSU staff or faculty members as references (cannot include your Education 1105 instructor or peer mentor)
bullet Consult coordinator if employed more than 20 hours/week

Preferred criteria:

bullet Completion of Introduction to the University
bullet Completion of one academic year at WSU

Applying

Submit your completed Peer Mentor Application and an unofficial transcript to the First Year Experience Office in the Student Service Center room 140.

* If a mentor is unable to serve for the entire semester during which an award was given, the tuition waiver must be repaid to the Scholarship Office. Please see the FYE Tuition Waiver Agreement (pdf document).

You may mentor more than once, provided a grade of "B" or above is received in Education 3170.
