A number of scholarships and awards are available through the Department of English. If you're interested, make sure you've made an online submission with the WSU Scholarship Office. The deadline for making a submission is Feb. 1, and the awards are given in April.

English Department Awards

The department awards a number of full and part-time tuition waivers to English majors who excel in their classes. Faculty submit names of their best students to the English Department Scholarship Committee which then makes the selection.

College of Arts & Humanities Awards

College-wide tuition waivers are awarded to those students majoring in English with high GPAs. A committee composed of a faculty representative from each department in the College of Arts & Humanities makes these decisions.

Privately Funded Awards

Nilson Award in honor of Clarence Waterfall

This fund was established by Dr. Wendell T. and Mrs. Barbara E. Nilson to honor recently retired Dr. Clarence Waterfall who usually selects the recipient for this award.

Patricia Haslam Award

If you’re a woman, 25 years of age or older, who is returning to school or starting college for the first time, this award is designed for you. You must also be an English major with a minimum GPA of 3.00.

Lee McKenzie Award

Dr. Lee McKenzie taught in the English Department, and died prematurely. Lee was a very fine poet, and the award is given to a student poet who shows great promise.

Floyd J. Woodfield Award

This cash award is given to the graduating English major with the highest accumulative GPA.

Gordon Allred Award

The award honors Dr. Gordon Allred, a long-time faculty member in the English Department. Because Dr. Allred is a very fine writer, the donor wants the award to “open the door for talented and dedicated writers to pursue their dreams.” Dr. Allred usually selects the recipient of this award.

John and Nancy Lowe Scholarship

You’ll be considered for this scholarship if you’re a freshman or sophomore student with strong English and/or English writing skills. We also look at scholastic achievement, financial need and promise in your chosen field when we make the selection. We will take both your course work and your personal writings into consideration.
