 Alternative Spring Break

An alternative spring break involves WSU students replacing the usual break with a week- long community service project which provides rewarding service and fun. Students travel to a different location for the project each year.

Bridging the Gap
Bridging the Gap is a program that works with the elderly population in our community.

This committee has planned and implemented a Senior Health and Information Fair that will be held every year in April at the Golden Hour Senior Center, which is located at 650 25th St.
Other activities are planned on a monthly basis and involves many agencies in the Ogden area. Come and join us!

CARES

CARES is a mentoring program in which the Volunteer Involvement Program works with inner city elementary students. CARES has been involved with three elementary schools working in the after school program in Ogden City School District. The volunteers plan and implement activities with the schools. The purpose is to spend time each month with the same child. The students have brought the children to Weber State University for bowling and parties, taken them to the Pumpkin Patch as well as to Some Dudes Playground. Every year new programs are created by the committee, but there seems to be a consensus that just spending time with these young children is a reward in itself.

Christmas Tree Express

Every year a committee from the Volunteer Involvement Program puts together the Christmas Tree Bridge. This committee purchases small trees and distributes them to organizations and departments across campus, who decorate them before they are displayed. All the trees are then set up in the Bridge connecting the Student Affairs Building with the Student Union Building. The trees are lit and enjoyed by the campus for three weeks at which time they are picked up by the people who decorated them and delivered to needy families. Last year the trees were judged by a committee and a cash prize was awarded to the winners.

Habitat for Humanity

Millions of families who live in substandard or poverty housing yearn for the day when their poor housing experiences will end. These people are willing to work hard and persist, but they need help. With WSU as a partner, Habitat for Humanity can be that source of help. Since 1976, Habitat has built or renovated more than 100,000 houses worldwide. Millard Fuller, founder and president of Habitat for Humanity International states, "Is it possible for everyone to have a simple, decent place to live in our world? Yes. We've seen the miracles that come with this simple action of making it happen – one family at a time."

Students are presently working on homes in Ogden on Doxey Avenue.

Homeless Projects

The Volunteer Involvement Program's Homeless Projects group works with Ogden Rescue Mission and St Anne's Rescue Mission, along with other community agencies. Students are encouraged to work with the Directors and Social Workers for both agencies in order to provide services that are needed. In the past our students have built a storage shed for food with donated time and materials and committed the time to sort and shelf food. Each year the students go on a scavenger hunt with a list of needed items provided by the agencies. Quilts have been made and donated for the dorms. The Rescue Mission has a clinic which is staffed by volunteer doctors and dentists, which is a great opportunity for students interested in the medical field to be involved in service.

YCC

The Volunteer Involvement Program works with Your Community Connection, which is located on 2261 Adams Avenue in Ogden City. Our students are involved in many activities at this center. We help supply volunteers for their fundraiser "Real Men Can Cook." We also work with young children while their parents attend various meetings. Our students work in inner- city homes helping with snow removal and yard work. Adult Education classes are offered at the YCC so help in reading, math and Spanish is critical. This is a great opportunity for Education and Social Work majors to get involved.
