Head Start is more than just a care center for children - it’s a goal-oriented preschool helping develop both children and their families. The program seeks to form cooperative partnerships with families and communities in order to help them achieve success for each child and family.
Mission and Description
Head Start also provides a full-day option for students. Center hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., or to meet the needs of parents.
Services are offered at no charge for income-qualifying families with children 0-5 years of age. Parents are encouraged to come and assist with classes whenever possible.
Some of the focus areas of Head Start are:
- Child health/ development services
- Education and early childhood development
- Child health and safety
- Child nutrition
- Child mental health
- Family partnerships
The Davis/Morgan/Summit Head Start and Early Head Start Programs will build a better future by forming cooperative partnerships with families and communities to help achieve success for each child and family.
WSU students can volunteer in Headstart classrooms throughout the Davis School District. Each classroom has a teacher and an assistant (see contact list below). Volunteers can help as a second assistant, helping students get started on computer project or on a crafts activity. Students in education or communications will benefit greatly by working within a structured curriculum that provides both a learning framework as well as assessment for children.
How WSU Students Can Help
Social Work interns from WSU are a common sight at Head Start. These interns help with the intake and registration process, data processing, program support, and in assisting staff. Internships at Head Start offers interns diverse experiences that develop practical skills and that contribute meaningfully to the families whom Head Start serves.

Volunteers can also assist in the Parent Information and Resource Center (PIRC) located within the Family Enrichment Center. This center contains hundreds of books and other resources that are available to help strengthen parents. The PIRC offers classes, referrals, activities, and workshops as well. Contact Head Start to find out more about how you can get involved. |
