The 22nd Annual National Service-Learning Conference
Dates: April 6-9, 2011
Location: Atlanta, Ga.
Proposals Due: December 17, 2010

 

Highlights of the 2011 conference include: Professional development opportunities for teachers, training for youth, an emphasis on service-learning for STEM education, an Administrators Academy for school and district leaders seeking to sustain service-learning, an exhibit hall showcasing schools, businesses, and nonprofit organizations, the Service-Learning Showcase and College Fair, the Fifth Annual Service-Learning World Forum, the Indigenous Service Forum, and Networking Opportunities.

The conference focuses on service-learning as a way of teaching and learning that builds academic skills and citizenship while addressing community needs in a genuine way. It convenes teachers and other service-learning practitioners, administrators, researchers, policy-makers, youth leaders, parents, program coordinators, national service members, community-based organization staffs, and corporate and foundation officers.

American Education Research Association: "Inciting the Social Imagination: Education Research for the Public Good"

AERA hosts a special interest group (SIG) on service-learning and experiential learning. The SIG's purpose is "to bring together both researchers and practitioners to build and promote understanding of SL and experiential  education for the betterment of the field. The theme of AERA’s 2011 Annual Meeting—“Inciting the Social Imagination: Education Research for the Public Good”— is intended to encourage submissions that address the conceptual, methodological, policy, and pragmatic challenges and opportunities in re-imagining the promise and potential of education research.”

Take advantage of the Early Bird Rate and register by February 25, 2011. Rates increase after February 25. On-site registration will take place at the Sheraton, Napoleon Foyer Third Level.

Connecting Campuses with Community

Date: May 16-20, 2011

This event is separated into two parts:

Curriculum development to develop high quality service learning courses
Led by Indiana Campus Compact                                           

Annual IUPUI Research Academy: Wednesday, May 18 to Friday, May 20 strengthening research on service learning and civic engagement Led by the IUPUI Center for Service and Learning   
Individuals can apply for one or both parts of the event.

Cost: $150 per event; $250 for both events

Last year over 40 faculty from across the country and around the world attended this two part event.  This year we have added a "train the trainer" track for Community Service or Service Learning Directors and others who may support faculty on their own campuses in their curriculum development and/or research.

Civic Engagement Administrator Conference

Date: May 25, 2011
Location: Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex

This annual conference, launched in 2003, is designed for administrators of campus civic engagement efforts. The conference offers structured time for group gatherings, presentations, roundtable discussions, informal question and answer, and deep reflection about civic engagement work.  The 2010 conference was the largest to date with nearly 70 civic engagement professionals from 34 campuses in North Carolina, Virginia and Georgia.

National Conference on Volunteering and Service

Dates: June 6-8, 2011

Co-convened by the Corporation for National and Community Service and Points of Light Institute, the National Conference on Volunteering and Service is the world’s largest gathering of volunteer and service leaders from the nonprofit, government, and corporate sectors. The annual event provides attendees with an opportunity to learn, connect and be inspired through a wide range of exciting and informative plenary sessions, workshops, special events, service projects, exhibits and specialized business tracks.

International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement
Date: November 2-4, 2011
Location: Chicago, IL

The mission of the Association is to support research on service-learning and community engagement.  The Association conference serves as a vehicle for disseminating new knowledge, rewarding excellence in research, and facilitating communication among scholars.  Researchers present findings from quantitative and qualitative research, share ideas derived from their work, and hear presentations by influential leaders in the field.  The conference does not feature presentations of program descriptions or evaluation reports.  However, practitioners and community partners are encouraged to attend the conference to participate in presentations of research on which they have collaborated and to gather useful empirical information that can be shared with their collaborators and used to shape program development and practice.  

The conference attendees are faculty, graduate students, academic administrators, and practitioners. The participants are primarily US-based, but beginning with the 2006 conference, the international participation was expanded to include a number of registrants from Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Taiwan and China.  Anticipated attendance is 350-400 people attending sessions
