The session centered on interviewing skills and finding the focus of a story to 100. 2001 National Communication Association National Conference, Atlanta, Georgia Connecting - Interpersonal and Small Group Communication: A University-High School Collaboration - Co-authored paper and created video presentation regarding the writing and producing aspects of Connecting: Interpersonal and Small Group Communication video series. PUBLICATIONS Cable Ad Sales [Vol. II, Issue 6], June 1996, What makes a GOOD spot? This article explained how to avoid the traps and pitfalls of writing poor television commercials. Cable Ad Sales is a subscription newsletter directed to advertising executives in the cable industry.
MEMBERSHIPS National Broadcasting Society/AERho 2002-present Society of Professional Journalists 2004-present TEACHING INNOVATIONS Weber State News P For over eight years developed the student-produced Weber State News program from a once-a-week 10 minute newscast to a twice-a-week, 30-minute newscast. P Provided students with more decision-making and newsroom leadership opportunities by obtaining activity waiver monies for WSN staff. P Improved the quality and quantity of newsroom equipment by obtaining money from student fees and obtaining used equipment donations. P Students earned awards for reporting in national and regional National Broadcasting Society and Society of Professional Journalists video competitions. P In 2007 & 2008 Weber State News students earned International Radio & Television Society all-expense paid fellowships in New York City. P In addition to internship possibilities in the Salt Lake market, I developed an internship program with KIFI-TV in Idaho Falls, Idaho to provide students with small market experience. Currently working on developing an internship program with KPVI in Pocatello, Idaho. Advanced Audio & Video Production P In 2008 collaborated with WSU’s nursing program to produce a training video based on the nursing department’s Mock Disaster scenario. P From 2002-2006, students collaborated with departments within the College of Arts and Humanities to produce a commencement video. The video was also used for recruitment and new student orientation. P National Broadcasting Society judges selected all but one video as national finalists. Overall the A&H video project has earned three NBS Grand Prizes for Best Industrial/Instruction/Promotional video. P Revised curriculum to include the production of a short feature film. P Music videos created by students in Advanced Audio & Video Production earned the National Broadcasting Society Grand Prize for Best Music Video in 2006 and 2007. ProStar Video Team P Collaborating with Multi-Media Services and Weber’s Athletic Department we created and trained a team of students to provide a video feed and operate the football stadium’s new ProStar video scoreboard. P Students had the opportunity to fun five different cameras, two replay boxes, a video switcher and graphics generator. P Before taking their places on the field, we trained our crew in several technical areas and instructed them how to build drama and entertainment on a video screen. P Crew members have gone on to work for ESPN, ESPN 2, Fox Sports and KJZZ. Studio 76 & As If Live P Assisted students in developing two different entertainment shows. P As If Live (produced from 2004-2005) earned a National Broadcasting Society/AERho Grand Prize for a DVD the group produced. P Studio 76 (2006-present) earned the 2007 and 2008 National Broadcasting Society AERho Grand Prize for Best Entertainment/Music Program. The student creator of Studio 76 earned an internship with the Conan O’Brian Show. Field Video Production & Performance P Public Service Announcements produced by student groups in this class won regional and national awards from the National Broadcast Society in 2006 & 2007. Advising P Developed a simple advising sheet to help students and their advisor keep track of their progress toward graduation. (See attached) Students comment on its ease to read and it serves as a backup in case of Banner system hiccups. P I recently shared this advising sheet with the communication faculty. Served as the video production expert in a collaborative team of communication instructors. Together we created a 15-part video series to deliver basic interpersonal and small group communication concepts to high school students taking this tele-concurrent course. 1998-1999 Executive Producer/Writer/Director, Stress & The Real Toy Story Dept. of Child & Family Studies. Working with the Department of Child and Family Studies I wrote, produced, and edited two 30-minute television specials. Stress described the impact of stress on the mind and body and discussed psychological, physiological and environmental methods of managing stress. The Real Toy Story focused on what toys are best for a child’s mental and physical development and which toys encourage poor social behavior. 1998 Executive Producer. I wrote and produced this recruitment video in collaboration with Weber State’s Communication Arts and Technologies (CATS) 1998 Executive Producer, College of Education Video College of Education. The Utah Board of Regents first viewed this video which described Weber State’s College of Education departments and programs.
