George Mason University - Summer Journalism Internships (Paid)

Now Accepting Applications

Dear Student Coordinator,

Do you know students who want to become journalists? The Institute for Humane Studies offers paid summer journalism internships for students and recent graduates with strong communication skills and an interest in the foundations of a free society.

Interns work for eight weeks at newspapers, radio stations, new media companies, and investigative newsrooms. The experience hones interns’ writing and critical thinking skills, and translates into a professional network and portfolio. Interns also receive a stipend, travel allowance, and housing assistance.

How does an internship translate into career prospects? Just ask Charles Couger, a two-time intern who worked with the “Stossel” show. During his internships, Charles “worked on every aspect of the show, including production, promotion, graphics, video editing, writing, research, and filming.” Today, Charles holds a full-time production position with “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren.”

If you have students looking for opportunities for next semester, we are still accepting applications for paid spring placements as well. Please take a moment to forward this email to potential candidates or invite them to explore the opportunity here: www.TheIHS.org/journalism.

Ok.com Internships (Paid)

Full Time Paid Internship:

Communication and CIT students

Expectations: Ok.com - your family’s media guide is ready to hire a motivated intern who can help with data collecting and research. Ok.com serves a unique audience that is looking for more than just information about movies, but rather, for information they can trust that delves deep into family values.

The first thing to know is this, as an intern, you’ll be working on real projects and treated as a full time employee. You won’t be fetching donuts or coffee for anyone. Although, we do enjoy Jamba Juice, so you may want to learn their secret recipes and be blender savvy (not required, but a plus).

You will be expected to work 40 hours per week at our Salt Lake City location and you will receive $10 per hour for your work. If money grew on trees, we’d probably pay you more, but then again, that would depend on how your smoothies taste. This is a Fall Semester internship and will last from September to December 2012. Some of your responsibilities may include but aren’t limited to:

• Help with data integrity of movie information and research reviews, synopses, and other information for movies, books, and video games that will appear on Ok.com

• Help with backend development and maintenance (Knowledge of HTML and CSS is a plus) • Research data for movies, books, and video games that will appear on Ok.com

• Pat your head while rubbing your belly

The application you’ll remember

Instead of submitting a professional portfolio, we are going to put your writing skills to the test. We are merely asking that you complete the following tasks:

• Compose tweet length reviews of your top ten favorite movies

• Write three paragraphs describing one of your most embarrassing moments

• Write one paragraph telling us why you deserve to be an intern at Deseret Digital Media working with Ok.com

• Get familiar with Ok.com by logging in and rating/reviewing some movies you’ve seen.

Attach an updated resume and if you have a blog or website, submit the url(s) and send all information to Bobby at bmacey@deseretdigital.com.

We look forward to receiving your application.

The Ok.com Team.

Zion's Bank Internship (PAID) - MUST ATTEND JAN. 16TH 1:00 PRESENTATION IN WATTIS 206

Zions Bank has several internship opportunities available. The focus of this exciting program is to hire a diverse pool of students who are attending various colleges and universities. These full-time, paid intern positions, located primarily in the Salt Lake area, will begin in June and end the last week of August. Our summer internship program was established in 1998 to give students the chance to explore the banking industry and the Zions Bank community culture. The objective of the internship program is to provide students an opportunity to use and apply their coursework to a “real life” environment. It encourages the student to think critically and to constantly redefine the content and process of the learning experience. The internship program also is expected to heighten the individual’s awareness of community issues, motivate students to create opportunities, embrace new ideas, and give direction to positive change. The internship will provide work experience relating to one or more of the following areas: Zions internship programs are generally for seniors and juniors, and potentially for outstanding sophomores. Information Sessions for Utah universities are offered each year. The application period for the summer program is typically January 1 - February 15. All applications MUST be submitted online at www.zionsbank.com. Select the “About us” button at the top of the web page, go to “Careers” and type “Internship” under key words to search for the requisition number, (available only during the application period).

Next Wednesday - January 16th at 1:00 p.m. in Room 206 of the Wattis Business Building - representatives from Zions Bank will be here to talk about their outstanding summer internship for students majoring in business and communication.  This is a full time work experience for the summer of 2013 (June through August).  It is a PAID experience and I believe the hourly rate in the past has been $12.00/hour.  It may have gone up.  The program is targeted primarily for seniors and juniors (seniors being students who will NOT complete their baccalaureate degree prior to December 2013).  They will consider a sophomore student if they come highly recommended from one of you.

The application process will be explained at the meeting on Jan. 16th.  Students who wish to apply, MUST attend next Wednesday's meeting in order to be considered.  They do not have to dress up in interview attire, they can come in their regular school attire.  No need to bring a resume as all applications must be submitted online.  The requisition number will be given at the presentation and students will be required to sign in.
