The TAPT Program | |||
|
What TAPT is: Teacher Assistant Path to Teaching History: The TAPT Program was created by the Teacher Education Dept. in the 1995-96 academic year. The program was funded by "Goals 2000" monies received from the Utah State Office of Education. The TAPT Program was created because of a request from the superintendents of six school districts that feed into Weber State. The school districts are No. Summit, Morgan, Box Elder, Weber, Davis and Ogden City. The superintendent's had a critical need for English as a Second Language/Bilingual teachers in their respective districts. Weber State complied with that request and thus the TAPT Program was born. In the intervening years, the program received a 5 year Bilingual grant from the Federal Government that ran out in the year2000. The participants had to be paid teacher assistants, or volunteers (6-8 hours per week), in their respective districts with the desire and commitment to become fully licensed teachers. We continue to add new applicants each year depending upon the funding available. Last year 2006-07 our superintendents asked Weber State to expand the TAPT program to include not only ESL teacher assistants or volunteers but also Early Childhood teacher assistants, and those who were working with Special Education students in the schools. We were only able to do this because of the generosity of private donors who have not only helped us start this program, but have been contributors along the way. The TAPT program started by accepting 21 applicants the first year, and we had our first TAPT graduate in 1996. Over the years the TAPT program has had Sixty-four graduates including those graduating this spring (08). The program currently has 116 participants all seeking teacher licensure. We accepted 42 new participants into the program for the 2008-2009 academic year for a total of 158 TAPT students. The TAPT program pays full in-state tuition up to $3,695.12 for the 2008-2009 academic year (summer 2008, fall 2008, spring 2009). TAPT does not pay student fees, transcript fees, developmental fees or individual lab fees.
