The World As A Classroom (1-3) Su, F, S

This graduate-level class is designed to provide enrichment opportunities for those who undertake either domestic or foreign travel to participate in study tours, research, and other professional development experiences. It offers participants an opportunity to learn outside the classroom in locations available only through travel. The class is primarily for teachers (K-12) and other school personnel.

Course Title

In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, this is a variable-title offering. When the number 6640 is used, it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript. The following titles have been approved:

A. Studies in Ecology for Teachers - Register

A course of study dealing with the relationships of plant and animal communities with the environment.

B. Research for the Science Classroom - Register

A course for teachers who work with academic researchers, scientists, engineers and educational specialists and in the process learn new skills and concepts to benefit the classroom. Projects may vary in duration from one to three weeks or even longer and may take place in locations around the world.

C. Professional Development for the Science Classroom  - Register

An offering to assist teachers in adapting new content knowledge, experience, and curriculum support materials into their specific educational situations. Activities may involve working with colleagues to develop teaching, learning, and assessment strategies called for in educational standards.

D. Tropical Ecology for Teachers - Register

A course for teachers dealing with tropical ecosystems and ecological principles. The class will focus on the composition of natural systems, the impact of human activity on those systems, and how societal values help determine the impacts.

E. Studies in Architecture, Art, and Design for Teachers - Register

A course for teachers who undertake travel to participate in study tours, research, and other professional development experiences. Studies may vary in duration from one to three weeks or even longer and may take place in locations around the world.

F. Studies in Archeology for Teachers  - Register

A course for teachers who undertake travel to participate in study tours, research, and other professional development experiences. Studies may vary in duration from one to three weeks or even longer and may take place in locations around the world.

G. Studies in Geology for Teachers  - Register

A course for teachers who undertake travel to participate in study tours, research, and other professional development experiences. Studies may vary in duration from one to three weeks or even longer and may take place in locations around the world.

Course Credits

Weber State University is on a semester system and the class is worth 1-3 semester hour credit(s), depending upon the nature and length of the travel study experience.

Proposals and contracts must be approved by the course instructor and the director of the Master of Education Program in order for credit to be given. The appropriate level of credit (1-3 semester hours) will also be determined by the instructor and must be approved by the director. As a general rule, the following table will be used as a guide in determining the maximum number of credit hours allowable. The class may be repeated for a maximum of 4 credits.

Many teachers may not be able to complete summer course requirements until their own schools start in the fall. For that reason, the class is also offered in the fall and spring semesters.

Participants are cautioned that some schools may not accept such credit toward master and doctorate degrees. Anyone pursuing such credit should request approval for credit from the appropriate institution prior to enrolling in this program.

Cost

A payment based upon the number of credit hours must accompany the registration form: one credit hour ($85), two credit hours ($140), or three credit hours ($210). Make all checks payable to Weber State University. Send the remittance and enrollment application to Continuing Education Registration, 4006 University Circle, Weber State University, Ogden, Utah 84408-4006, or your may register online by clicking "register' at the course descriptions above. No refunds will be given for courses not completed. You may cancel your enrollment prior to departure in which case there will be a $5.00 per credit hour charge deducted from the refund. Written notice of cancellation is required.

If students are seeking approval from their school district to count these credits for tuition reimbursement or columnar compensation, they are advised to do so prior to enrolling in this program.

Grades and Transcripts

A letter grade will be given in the course. Grades will be based on the required materials (see course requirements) which must be submitted to the instructor by the end of the appropriate semester. Please note: final reports cannot be returned. All materials submitted for evaluation will become property of Weber State University.

Grade reports will not be mailed to participants. Official transcripts must be requested by writing to Student Records, Weber State University, Ogden, Utah 84408-1102, or a printable transcript request form is at  http://departments.weber.edu/registrar/requestform.txt which you can fax to 801-626-6936. There is no transcript fee for one copy.

WSU may not be held liable for any act or omission by any operator the student may contact for services. WSU's sole responsibility is for instructional services, academic assessment, and the awarding of credit upon successful completion of requirements.

Course Requirements

  1. Submit a typed, one-page research/workshop idea along with the student contract prior to travel to: Dr. Michael Slabaugh, 2503 University Circle, Weber State University, Ogden, Utah 84408-2503. The one-page research/workshop idea should include an overview of what you plan to do. Discuss the educational objectives of your project and list three references you plan to consult prior to your departure.

  2. Please complete the enrollment application enclosed with the remittance and forward with payment to Continuing Education, 4006 University Circle, Weber State University, Ogden, Utah 84408-4006, or you may register online by clicking "register" at the course descriptions above.

  3. A daily log must be maintained during the research/workshop period. It is to contain notes on places visited, personal contacts or interviews, geographical points of interest, teacher observations at specific sites, and a list of educational materials obtained. Note in the log instructional experience gained from each day of travel/study. (Please submit a photocopy upon completion.)

  4. One unit of instruction must be submitted for each course credit hour containing, in outline form, a minimum of one twenty-minute lesson for each unit. The outline for the lessons should contain: (1) Title, (2) Subject, (3) Grade level, (4) Objectives, (5) Intended learning outcomes, (6) Materials needed, (7) Procedures, and (8) Plans for assessment.

  5. Non-classroom personnel: Other assignments will be arranged for those who are not classroom teachers. Examples would be study reports, development of a library resource file, etc. Descriptive plans should be submitted telling how you plan to use the material developed or how you intend to apply the knowledge gained in your position.

  6. Submit evidence of research/workshop receipts (photocopies).
